Welcome to Meng's Martial Arts of Richmond

At Meng’s of Richmond, we teach Shaolin Wing Chun kung fu as it was originally discovered by the Shaolin monks.  Our knowledge traces back to both the Northern and Southern Shaolin Temples.  It is a system that is not limited by style or technique.  It is a complete martial arts system addressing all ranges of hand-to-hand combat – kicking, striking, trapping, and grappling.

Wing Chun specifically traces its origins to the Southern Shaolin Temple at the end of the Ming dynasty where a meeting of minds occurred between Shaolin warrior monks, retired military personnel, and community martial artists. This convergence of knowledge gave birth to a martial arts representing a theoretical framework for a maximally efficient and effective combat system.  One can see Wing Chun’s effectiveness through the accomplishments of some of its famous practitioners like Bruce Lee and his teacher Yip Man (Ip Man).  As we are aligned with no style, all schools of martial arts thought are our brethren, and we teach the concepts that allow our students to thrive in whatever environment they find themselves be it a martial arts school or life itself.

At Meng’s of Richmond, the goal is to teach our students to achieve their ultimate potential.  Our most important emphasis is cultivating the self.  We strive to produce warriors not fighters.  Warriors aim to conquer themselves rather than searching to dominate others.  Tracing our lineage back to the Shaolin temples of old, we bring that knowledge to the present day.  In this manner, we create the warriors that can forge a better world.

Staff Training

Children's Leadership Elite Students will begin learning the Shaolin Staff! The Shaolin monks have practiced the hand and staff forms for thousands of years. Centuries ago it would be common place for Shaolin staffs to be custom made for the individual. When monks traveled, they did not like to carry weapons, but a good staff is also a good tool to move obstacles on the way, jump across a stream, or to use as a cane when one is tired. The staff is the most popular and is considered the chief weapon of Shaolin. Many of its movements take advantage of its qualities, like the fact that it can be held from any of its parts and used in all directions. This allows the practitioner to dominate a wider range and make stronger blows, due to the force it obtains when used in certain ways. The staff’s flexibility is another important factor, since it obtains some additional strength as it is waved towards a target. It also enables the practitioner to swiftly attack from different directions. There is a saying "it leaves the temple a staff and comes back a spear".

Some of the fundamental aims of the staff are to increase the force, speed and distance delivered in a strike. The user's movement, technique and skill will be determine the power and effectiveness behind any long-range extensive strike or crush. In addition, it is used for joint locks to immobilize or subdue an adversary. The staff is a weapon that can also be used for defense, it can be used to perform a dodge or to block an attack. Other martial arts techniques, such as blocks and kicks, may also be combined with the staff. Please see the office to purchase a staff in order to begin your training!
